Today in history

1774 - Joseph Priestly discovers oxygen. People were now able to breathe.

1950 - American Bowling Congress ends all-white-males rule. Millions and millions of black people flock to the sport.

1981 - MTV made its debut at 12:01 AM. The first video shown was Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles. The channel would show eight more videos, before abandoning music altogether for shows about strangers living together, souping up 1982 Toyota Corollas, touring homes of rappers and skateboarders, and people getting f'd with by Demi Moore's boyfriend.

I'll never forget when I first saw MTV, in the summer of 1982. I was mesmerized. "Hold Me" by Fleetwood Mac was the first video I ever saw.
